A monastery typical of the 17th century

Built in the utmost sober style without any painted or sculpted decor, the Capucins Monastery met the requirements of 17th century typical monastery architecture. At that time many other christian congregations were praising the ideal of poverty: the Dominicans, the Clarists, the Carmelites, or the Augustinians.

The Abbaye des Capucins Hotel-Spa-Resort has kept the original buildings' master plan, the chapel and above all, the cloister with its round arches standing on square pillars.

The neo-classical style

There is no existing document describing the aspect of the facade before the 1833 great fire. We only know that there was one less floor. The renovation works were undertaken in the neo classical style using bricks which was the architectural trend at that time in Montauban.

The facade has been flanked by two pavilions with a triangle pediment on top, each of them bearing a Doric portico with heavy stone columns as well as an entablature in front of the wall. One of them gives way to the chapel and the other to the cloister. This conveys a feeling of unity with the pediments of the neighbouring buildings, namely the Saint Theodard college and the old Carmelites convent.
