Historical background

Hot spot of protestantism in France in the early 17th century, Montauban finally surrenders to the attacks led by King Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu to recover the city and establish catholicism as a State religion.

August 20th, 1629 

Richelieu enters in Montauban. The Capucins monks that accompany him start the building of their monastery. 

April 25th, 1631

Blessing of the first stones, which can be seen in the chapel and the hotel lobby.

1632

First mass celebrated in honour of King Louis XIII.

18th Century

Important improvements (Quai Montmurat and Cours Foucault)

1792

Driven out by the French Revolution, the monks leave the monastery which becomes a prison, and later on, a wool mill.

1808

Pope Pie VII restores the diocese

1825

He opens the Grand Seminary after having asked Monseigneur Cheverus, Boston's archbishop (USA) to come and settle February

1833

Large renovation programme undertaken by Monseigneur Dubourg

July 2nd, 1833

A great fire destroys the facade, part of the cloister and other buildings. Reconstruction takes place rapidly: the cloister's vaults are replaced by a simple ceiling, a floor is added on top of the whole building, and the facade is renovated as we know it today

1905

Short interruptions of the Grand Seminary's activity due to the French Law of separation between Church and State.

World Wars

The monastery is requisitioned during both world conflicts to be used as a military hospital.

1958

A Seminary for the vocation of the elders replaces the Grand Seminary.

1971

The Saint Theodard boys High School settles in the place.

1975

Filming of some scenes from the "Vieux Fusil", a film by Robert Enrico starring Romy Schneider and Philippe Noiret.

December 2002

The building is purchased from the Diocese of Montauban.

2003

The congregation which was present since 1971 around the courtyard between the chapel and the rue des Jacobins leaves the monastery.

July 2006

Opening of the Abbaye des Capucins Hotel and of the Table des Capucins gourmet restaurant.

May 2007

Opening of the Capucins' Spa.

May 2009

Opening of the Capucins' Bistro, inauguration of the outdoor swimming pool and the arbour on the great courtyard.

December 2009

The Capucins' Bistrot is extended.

March 2010

Inauguration of the Olympe de Gouges salon.

January 2011

The hotel resort adopts its final name: the "Abbaye des Capucins Hotel-Spa-Resort".
